A British animal charity is appealing for help in finding a home for two bears confiscated from a Russian restaurant after finding nobody to take them because they were both alcoholics. Anna Kogan from the British Big Hearts Foundation has won permission to move the bears to a new location but said that they were struggling to find somewhere in Europe that was capable of taking them. She said: "The problem is that they are alcoholics, and it is even more difficult to wean bears off alcohol than is with human beings." Experts also said alcoholic bears suffer all the same problems that humans do, including unpredictable tempers and the withdrawal symptoms that a human being might expect. The two bears were confiscated by a court in the city of Sochi in south-western Russia’s Krasnodar Krai after they were found lying amid rubbish and debris at a local restaurant. They were used as an attraction by the restaurant owner who allowed customers to buy the bears drinks, which made them alcoholics and meant no place could be found for them at local zoos until the British charity step forward. But they too have confirmed that they are having trouble finding a place for the bears. A spokesman for the Centre for Animal Welfare in Sochi, Ekaterina Gontareva, confirmed: "We are working together with a British citizen Anna Kogan, who contacted us a month ago and offered to help find a place for the bears. At the moment the difficulty is in transporting them but also in finding somewhere that will treat them for their alcoholism." Sochi was the location for the Winter Olympics with 31 billion GBP was spent on improving the infrastructure but it did nothing to improve the condition for the bears which have been kept at the Georgian cuisine restaurant to entertain the visitors for at least 20 years. And the owner of the bears Dzheniks Uzaroshvili rejected the suggestion that he was being cruel saying: "Beer is good for the bears because of the Sochi climate." He refused to comment on the other fun activity of suddenly shining spotlight on the bears and laughing at their reaction. According to evidence given to the court the spotlight was the reason one of the bears was virtually blind. Prosecutors move to confiscate the bears after a protest by 500 activists in 2012 outside the restaurant. The charity said anybody who might be able to help them find a home for the bears should contact them at the following email address: info@bigheartsfoundation.org (ends)
